27: The Fight for Recognition and Environmental Justice - The Nisenan Tribe with Shelly Covert
Welcome to Lunacy; where we discern the sacred from the insane and admit that whether we like it or not, we are all profoundly affected by the cycles of the moon.
Today on the podcast, I’m joined by Shelly Covert, Spokesperson for the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe. We discuss the history and struggles of her Tribe, including the loss of land and the impact of genocide. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing and honoring Indigenous cultures and the need for sovereignty and self-governance. Shelly highlights the challenges faced by unrecognized Tribes, and shares her vision for a world where Indigenous knowledge and traditions are respected and integrated into society.
